Julia's New Wine Blog

First Post!

Experience with Wine

So far in my 21 years of life, I have had a good experience with wine. I've grown up knowing about it because it is my parents drink of choice and it has always been in our house. Now that I am 21 and can legally drink, I typically get a glass of wine or two when I go out to restaurants because I prefer it over a cocktail. I also enjoy having wine with my friends and family when I am home, in my apartment, or wherever I am with them. I love to have wine with dinner, too! I try new wine fairly often because I have am curious and want to try different types. I am typically drinking wine every week because I like to have a glass while I am cooking.

Drink of Choice

My favorite type of wine is white, more specifically, sauvignon blanc. Truth be told, I do always choose the cheaper bottles because I am a college student and don't need much to satisfy me. However, I do enjoy pinot grigio, too! For both types, I usually reach for the Cupcake brand but if I am at Trader Joe's at home, I pick up whatever looks best. I have currently been trying different types of reds, such as cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir. I am finding I like cab sauv better so I am excited to learn about different types of reds and how to make the distinction between them! I try to avoid sweet wine, like moscato and riesling, as much as possible because I don't like the taste at ALL and it gives me a terrible headache the next day.

For the course

I am really excited about this course because I have been drinking wine for a couple of years now but haven't ever learned too much about it. I know about different types of wines and some regions because I have worked in a restaurant for a number of years and we were required to know certain bottles. However, I can't tell the difference between different whites and reds too much. I was reading a past blog post in the syllabus for an example and I saw that the writer was able to taste different notes in the wine. That is a huge goal of mine for the course. I'd also like to learn the language a little bit more, as it was mentioned in the first lecture video. I am excited and happy to learn more about something that I consume often!
