Tasting - Le Per son Pain

 About the wine

I picked up "Le Per son Pain: Muscadet Sèvre Et Maine" from the Vintage Cellar this week for $15.95. It is a white wine, the grape variety is melon de bourgogne, and is from the Loire Valley region of France. The vintage year is 2021!

Anjouwinefestival.com Review

"Le Per son Pain" is one of Anjouwine Festival best sellers, as stated on their website. The wine was made on lees, is bright and crisp, has fresh fruit aromas, and is minerally. On this website, there is a scale that features Oakyness, Tannins, Body, and Acidity. This website said that there are high levels of acid and tannins and lower levels of oak and body.

Wine Folly Review

On page 129, Wine Folly says that it is known for its "lean, minerally white wines that pair famously with seafood." It primarily grows in France, should be served fairly cold, and has flavors of lime, seashell, green apple, green pear, and bread dough. It also says that the acidity is very high, while the tannins, sweetness, body, and alcohol are all pretty low.

On page 230, it tells me that melon de bourgogne is grown close to the coast and that the wines labelled "sur lie" where aged on lees to gives them a rounder mouthfeel and yeasty aromas.

Personal Review

This wine was amazing and maybe so far, my favorite! I picked it up because I saw on the label at the Vintage Cellar that it paired really well with seafood and I was having salmon for dinner so I thought the two would pair well. A few hours later and a messed up salmon piece, I drank the wine by itself and was very surprised. I kind of picked it up on a whim because I didn't talk to any employees and get a recommendation because they were all busy, so I did some digging for myself. Similar to most whites that I have tried and enjoyed, this one was crisp and not sweet at all, something I was a little worried about. It was great on its own and I feel like I did taste the fruity flavors coming through. I wish I had smelt it because it is known for its yeasty aromas and would be curious to see if I picked up on that. However, it was really good and I would 100% get it again.

Tasting - Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio

 About the wine

This past week, I picked up Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio from Kroger for $12.99. I bought a half bottle so I could save some money but still try something new. The grape variety is Pinot Gris/Grigio, it is from Italy, more specifically the Trentino-Alto Adige region and the vintage year is 2022.

Wine.com Review

Wine.com says Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio is a well-balanced, clean and refreshing wine. They said that it is a dry white that pairs well with many cheeses and seafood dishes. They noted an aroma of golden apples, too, and has a flavorful personality.

Wine Folly Review

On page 149 of the Wine Folly book, the authors said that Italy was the most common producer of Pinot Grigio. The flavors of Pinot Grigio are raw almonds, cantaloupe, lemon zest, white peach, and crushed gravel. The acidity is higher on this wine, too.

On page 256, it says that Alto Adige is a famous region of Pinot Grigio and from this region, they tend to be more floral and acidic.

Personal Review

I really enjoyed this wine, the flavors were robust but very well-balanced. I have always seen it in stores but never wanted to buy it because it was a bit pricer, so this was fun for me to try out. I didn't have it with any food, just while I was watching The Bachelor with my roommates. I had them try some and they also loved it. I didn't get any notes of the crushed gravel or florals, however I could tell that it was acidic but I had no problem with that and really liked it. I love a good white wine and after sitting in the fridge, it was so crisp and perfect for what I wanted. I still wish I was able to detect more of these flavors that I am reading about in the book, however, I feel like I will slowly get there! Overall, this was a great wine and I would have it again. I would try it out with food, like a seafood and pasta dish. I don't love the price but it is a fun, one-time try. And maybe when I am home with my parents they can get it for me.

Tasting - "Rieslingfreak No. 33"

 All About Rieslingfreak No. 33

Rieslingfreak No. 33 was recommended by a nice man at the Vintage Cellar last week. The grape variety is Riesling, and the country of origin is Australia in the Clare Valley region. The vintage year is 2023 and it was $18.95 from Vintage Cellar.

Reviews from Vintage Cellar

When I went to the Vintage Cellar, I told the man I was looking for something that would pair nicely with what I was going to have for dinner that night (lemon garlic chicken with pasta) and he recommended a Riesling. I told him my budget was under $20 and that I wanted something to enhance the flavors of my dinner. He walked me over to the section and began going between two different Rieslingfreak wines, one was another number but I forgot what it was. He then decided on No. 33 which he said would go well. He described it as a light, dry wine with lemon notes, and some fruits like apricot, and lime as well. He said that it was a really good wine and a bang for your buck. As we also learned in class, he said that it was a good Riesling because it was grown in a region of Australia that is known to have good Rieslings.

Wine Folly Review

On page 158, Wine Folly said that the Riesling from South Australia (Rieslingfreak) has lime peel, green apple and papaya, jasmine, and diesel flavors. I could taste the lime peel flavors because it was tart in your mouth. I couldn't taste any of the other ones because I don't think the meal I ate with it brought out those flavors. Wine Folly mentioned acidity which I could taste because it was paired with a lemon garlic chicken so I think the two paired well. On page 207, Wine Folly said that Clare Valley Riesling was a refreshing dry Riesling which I can 100% agree with. I wish that I tried to taste more of the petroleum flavor during this tasting.

Personal Review

I overall really liked this wine, it was light and refreshing which is exactly what I go for when I am looking for wines. As I mentioned earlier, I had it with a lemon garlic chicken and pasta which was so good and the flavors of the chicken really brought out the citrusy flavors in the wine. I think the pasta mellowed out the citrus flavors at times. I served it chilled which made it very good and for the price point, I would drink this again. I shared the bottle with my roommate who also really enjoyed it. I had never had a Riesling before and I was nervous it was going to be sweet but it was perfect.
